Services for People with Disabilities

This information provides a brief summary of the services offered by The Children's Museum of Indianapolis to people with disabilities. If you have specific questions related to any of these services, please contact the Information Desk in the Welcome Center on Level 1 of the museum, or call (317) 334-4000 or 1-800-820-6214 outside of Indianapolis. If you have questions during your visit look for staff members wearing white name badges. They will be happy to assist you.

Barrier Free Access
Most areas of the museum are barrier free. However, some areas cannot be altered to be more accessible without damaging the historic nature or natural habitat of certain artifacts like the tool car in All Aboard!

First Aid
Contact any staff member in an emergency or non-emergency situation. Protection Services staff are available to assist as well.

Food Services
Visitors with special food needs can review nutrition and ingredient listings by contacting any staff member in the Food Court.

Medical Equipment / Medication Storage
The Information Desk or Coat Check on Level 1 can provide this service for visitors. Contact museum staff in either location.

Hearing Impaired Services
Several services are available to assist our hearing impaired visitors, including:
  • FM Sound Enhancement Devices in the SpaceQuest® Planetarium, and Lilly Theater.
  • ASL interpreters for designated performances in Lilly Theater.
  • Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf (TDDs) are available at the pay phones in the Welcome Center on Level 1.
  • TDD phone number — (317) 920-2020.

Mobility Impaired Services
  • Doors
    Accessible doors are located at both entrances of the museum.
  • Drinking Fountains
    Accessible drinking fountains are located in the Welcome Center, and near the Family Rest Rooms on Level 2.
  • Wheelchairs
    Wheelchairs can be checked out for free and can be reserved in advance. Call (317) 334-3322 to make a reservation.
  • Queues
    Most queuing areas in the museum are 36" wide. If you need assistance in any area, contact the nearest staff member.
  • Rest Rooms
    Accessible rest rooms are located on all levels of the museum.
  • Seating Space
    Wheelchair seating is available in the SpaceQuest Planetarium and Lilly Theater.
  • Parking — Assistance and Access
    Handicapped spaces are available in the parking lot nearest to the museum entrance. If you need assistance finding an available handicapped space, contact any parking lot staff member.
    Golf carts are also available to transport visitors to and from their vehicles. Contact any parking lot staff member or the Information Desk attendant for this service.

Project SafePlace
  • The museum is a participating facility for Project SafePlace. Youth seeking assistance should contact any staff member.
